Roman People
Ancient civilization that held the power
The origins of the Romans are uncertain. The most likely theory is that they were descendants of the Latins and Sabines who lived in Central Italy. By the 3rd century B.C., the Romans had conquered most of Italy. They moved on to conquer Greece, Spain, North Africa, and what we call today France. The Roman Empire was a complex and diverse civilization that had an extraordinary effect on the world.
The Romans` greatest influential culture
The Romans in Italy had a culture that was rich and diverse. They excelled in art and architecture. The Roman civilization is also credited with developing the first modern sewage system. The Romans` culture greatly influenced modern Western society as we know it today. Many aspects of modern European and American cultures are influenced by Roman values such as determination, courage, honesty, duty, respect and honor to name a few. The Romans believed that their duty to the common good outweighed their personal interests and happiness.
Polytheism, worship and divination
Religion was an important part of Roman daily life. The Romans believed in many different gods and goddesses. If the gods were happy, the Romans believed that they would stay healthy and strong and their crops would grow. The main god was Jupiter who was the large god of thunderstorms and weather patterns. He had a wife named Juno, who was the queen of the gods as well as the protector of women. The Romans believed that the spirits of their ancestors were also essential to worship. They did this by holding ceremonies at their family tombs to honor them. The Romans also practiced divination, trying to discover what would happen in the future by reading animal bones or the weather signs which could tell them what sort of harvest they might have.
