Biking in Lucca

Lucca is a splendid little city in Tuscany. It offers its visitors to discover the Roman amphitheater,  Cathedral of San Martino, lovely park of San Cassiano and other delightful sights. The center of this city is completely surrounded by the oldest medieval walls in Europe, which are a popular place for biking. Just outside the walls, there are several bike shops where you can rent bikes for an hour or two. The city of Lucca has a flat terrain, so it's not very strenuous to cycle around.

Biking is one of the most popular activities for tourists and locals here. The walkable city is surrounded by a wall built to protect its inhabitants from invasion. Today, this wall is used as a bike trail where people can ride around the city, ogle at the captivating views, and stay safe from car drivers.

Luca's cyclists are your friends

The trail is quite flat and easy for even beginners to navigate. However, be prepared for crowds when biking on weekends and holidays. There are also several places along the way where people sit on benches and picnic, so expect to be sharing space with other people. The good news is that you can park your bike anywhere on the street along the wall and no one will steal it – although there are plenty of people who want to rent them. 

Country roads

The walled city's countryside is laced with hundreds of kilometers of well-maintained roads that offer easy pedaling for all abilities. The cycle paths are particularly well-suited to family outings, with very little traffic and magnificent scenery in every direction. You'll catch many picturesque villages and small towns, such as Ponte a Moriano, Vorno and San Pancrazio with its little church, bridges that were built long ago by Roman architects, as well as river Serchio with its admirable view.
