Museo dell'Opera del Duomo

Museo dell'Opera del Duomo is the museum of the Cathedral, founded in 1891. The collections housed here are inspired by the religious and civil history of Sienese art. The museum's itinerary is spread over two floors and includes works by Giovanni Pisano, Donatello, Michelangelo and many others.

Precious art heritage

The main part of the museum is situated in the former monastery of San Paolo and hosts a collection of works coming from the Cathedral and its adjacent bell tower, called Giotto's Campanile. The museum also comprises collections from other religious buildings in Florence: San Lorenzo, Santa Maria Novella, Badia Fiorentina and Ognissanti.

Museo dell'Opera del Duomo contains masterpieces by some of the greatest artists from the 14th century through the 16th century. The most notable works on display are from Piazza del Duomo: you can enjoy the original marble panels of Nicola Pisano's pulpit, Donatello's Cantoria, and Michelangelo's unfinished Pietà.

The collection includes works by many notable Renaissance artists, including Lorenzo Ghiberti and Luca della Robbia. It also houses a large assembling of manuscripts and rare books. Here you can see art encompassing Florentine Gothic architecture and its transition to Early Renaissance.
