Province of Lucca

The capital city of the Province

Lucca is a lovely peaceful town located on the Serchio river in Tuscany, Italy. There are many interesting churches and palaces in the town center as well as many quaint little shops. Among other reasons, it is famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls. Lucca is also known for its annual summer festival, which attracts many international artists to perform there.

What to see in the Province of Lucca? There are many hilltop villages to explore: the wine town of Montecarlo, the spectacular walled city of Barga and the ancient village of Bagni di Lucca.

Cozy medieval village

Montecarlo offers lovely views on the rolling hills of Lucca that are covered with olive trees. This quaint little town is also home to one of the most famous wineries in Italy. The combination of rich soils and a Mediterranean climate makes it perfect for growing grapes. This is where Chianti, Chianti Classico, Chianti Reserva, Vino da Tavola Rosso, Bianco and Rosato wines are made.

Marvelous landscapes

Barga sits at the foot of the Alps Apuane and, thanks to that, provides the best panoramic views. The city is known as an "open-air museum" because it preserved its medieval walls and many palaces, churches, towers and houses, which still form part of the historical center. A visit to Barga can start with a stroll through the streets lined with medieval stone houses. The surrounding countryside is perfect for long walks or bike rides, for example, along old paths leading to monasteries or castles. The best time to visit Barga is during the summer when the city is full of colors and alive.

Ancient spa resort

The village of Bagni di Lucca, perched on a hillside, is a traditional Tuscan thermal spa resort. It's surrounded by a landscape of forests and towering mountains, offering plenty of activities for outdoor lovers. The town's name means "Baths of Lucca," and its memorable hot springs were already attracting visitors in Roman times. Today the city is still popular for its spas, but there are other activities in the surrounding countryside. Bagni di Lucca is an excellent place for cycling, hiking and horseback riding.
