The term Renaissance is noted for the revival of an interest in classical antiquity, ancient literature, humanistic principles, and classical artistic styles. The Italian Renaissance was at its height in the 15th century. This was a time of unparalleled cultural achievement, which saw the emergence of some of the most renowned artists of all time. The most famous names today are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Many other artists also made their mark in this period. Italian painter and writer Giorgio Vasari described the High Renaissance as epitomizing the spirit of a golden age.
